Introduction Figure 39 summarizes the locations of harmful algal bloom (HABs) events registered in Mexico during the last 25 years (Ochoa 2002). Despite our efforts, this reflects only part of the actual HAB episodes that occurred along the Mexican coastline in this period. The map was prepared using information collected from over 100 reports of various Mexican researchers describing their observations. These reports are found in different media, sometimes difficult to access (Table 20). Yet, one very important conclusion of the information is that only in a handful of cases has the nature of the toxins, the causative organisms, and/or the implicated ecological and socioeconomic impacts been studied in detail. In these records, very little information is provided about the conditions that triggered the sudden proliferation of noxious microalgal blooms along the Mexican coast. Analyzing the data displayed in Figure 39 and listed in Table 20 together, it can be observed that various reports correspond to the same location. This does not imply that a given “red tide” event was repeatedly reported, rather that such a location was hit several times within the studied period.

Marine Biotoxins: Occurrence, Toxicity, Regulatory Limits and Reference Methods

Harmful algal blooms are natural phenomena caused by the massive growth of phytoplankton that may contain highly toxic chemicals, the so-called marine biotoxins causing illness and even death to both aquatic organisms and humans. Their occurrence has been increased in frequency and severity, suggesting a worldwide public health risk. Marine biotoxins can accumulate in bivalve molluscs and regul...

Ocean warming since 1982 has expanded the niche of toxic algal blooms in the North Atlantic and North Pacific oceans.

Global ocean temperatures are rising, yet the impacts of such changes on harmful algal blooms (HABs) are not fully understood. Here we used high-resolution sea-surface temperature records (1982 to 2016) and temperature-dependent growth rates of two algae that produce potent biotoxins, Alexandrium fundyense and Dinophysis acuminata, to evaluate recent changes in these HABs. For both species, pot...

Use of biosensors for the detection of marine toxins

Increasing occurrences of harmful algal blooms (HABs) in the ocean are a major concern for countries around the globe, and with strong links between HABs and climate change and eutrophication, the occurrences are only set to increase. Of particular concern with regard to HABs is the presence of toxin-producing algae. Six major marine biotoxin groups are associated with HABs. Ingestion of such t...

Okadaic Acid Meet and Greet: An Insight into Detection Methods, Response Strategies and Genotoxic Effects in Marine Invertebrates

Harmful Algal Blooms (HABs) constitute one of the most important sources of contamination in the oceans, producing high concentrations of potentially harmful biotoxins that are accumulated across the food chains. One such biotoxin, Okadaic Acid (OA), is produced by marine dinoflagellates and subsequently accumulated within the tissues of filtering marine organisms feeding on HABs, rapidly sprea...

Evidence for a Novel Marine Harmful Algal Bloom: Cyanotoxin (Microcystin) Transfer from Land to Sea Otters

"Super-blooms" of cyanobacteria that produce potent and environmentally persistent biotoxins (microcystins) are an emerging global health issue in freshwater habitats. Monitoring of the marine environment for secondary impacts has been minimal, although microcystin-contaminated freshwater is known to be entering marine ecosystems. Here we confirm deaths of marine mammals from microcystin intoxi...
